A step-by-step guide to mounting and wiring LED whip lights on your UTV or ATV, with tips on positioning, routing, and common mistakes to avoid.

Quick answer

Mount the whip light base to a flat metal surface on your UTV or ATV, route the wiring harness to the battery or a switched power source, and secure all cables with zip ties to prevent snagging.

Choosing the right mounting location

Pick a spot on the roll cage, roof rack, or rear bumper that is flat, sturdy, and clear of moving parts or hot exhaust components. Avoid areas where the whip light will hit branches or cargo. The base must sit flush to prevent vibration damage.

Wiring considerations

Most LED whip light kits include a wiring harness with a fuse, switch, and relay. Connect the positive wire to the battery positive terminal or an accessory fuse box, and the ground wire to a clean chassis ground. Always use the included fuse to protect the circuit.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Mount the whip light base: Use the included hardware to attach the base to a clean, flat metal surface. Tighten bolts evenly but do not overtighten—stripped threads or cracked plastic bases are common mistakes. Add a thin rubber pad between the base and the mounting surface if the area is not perfectly flat. Check that the base is level before tightening fully.
  2. Route the wiring harness: Run the power and ground wires from the whip light base toward the battery or fuse box. Keep wires away from sharp edges, moving suspension parts, and exhaust pipes. Use zip ties every 6–8 inches to secure the harness to the frame or roll cage. Leave a small loop of slack near the whip light base to allow for flex without pulling the connector loose.
  3. Connect to power and ground: Attach the positive wire to the battery positive terminal or an accessory fuse box using a ring terminal. Connect the ground wire to a clean, unpainted chassis bolt. Install the inline fuse as close to the battery as possible. If the whip light does not turn on, check the ground connection first—paint or rust under the ring terminal is the most common cause.
  4. Test the lights and secure cables: Turn on the power and cycle through the lighting modes to confirm all functions work. Once verified, zip tie any loose cable loops and tuck excess wire out of sight. Double-check that the whip light antenna clears the tallest point of your vehicle when fully extended. A whip light that touches a garage door or tree branch on the first ride will likely break the antenna or mount.
